.::OSU Student/Humane Society Volunteer Transfers 16 Puppies 1138 Miles to Give Them a Second Chance at Life ::.

On Tuesday, August 26, Janis Kuzma, an Oregon State University student and animal lover transferred 16 puppies from a shelter in Kingman, Arizona to Heartland Humane Society in Corvallis, Oregon to give them another chance at life.

Animal Care Tech., Allie, holds two of the sixteen that arrived Tuesday.
Heartland Humane Society agreed to take in the puppies when they heard that the Kingman shelter was full.
“Fortunately the people of our area are more responsible about dog breeding (although the same can not be said for cats). It seems the people of Kingman are not as enlightened about dog spay and neuter and therefore their shelter is still forced to euthanize puppies for space. We are confident we can find them all responsible homes and will not have to euthanize them or any other dogs to accommodate them,” says Executive Director, Kerry Mullin.
The Corvallis based shelter still experiences tremendous challenges when it comes to cats and kittens.
Janis Kuzma, a pre-vet student at OSU volunteers at Heartland during the school year and at the Kingman shelter where she lives during the summer. Her compassion for animals is so great she was willing to spend 19 hours driving with 16 puppies to Oregon.
“While it is not unusual for shelters in Oregon to help each other when kennels get full, it is an incredible act of compassion for Janis to bring these dogs all the way from Arizona,” says Mullin.
