What do animal shelters do when they run out of room or have a dog that is perfectly healthy but has not been adopted? Shelters transfer dogs, cats, rabbits, and other companion animals throughout Oregon and beyond. In the past week, Heartland Humane Society has transferred in 25 dogs.

On Easter Sunday, staff members from Heartland Humane Society travelled to Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene to pick up 10 small breed dogs.  The dogs, originally from several California shelters, were taken in by Best Friends Animal Society, and then transferred to other shelters.  Greenhill transferred in 19 dogs and Heartland transferred in 10.  Of these 10 dogs at Heartland Humane Society, 9 are Chihuahua mixes and one is a Jack Russell terrier.  The dogs will be available for adoption at Heartland Humane Society pending health and behavior evaluations.

Heartland also transferred a Labrador and her eight newborn puppies from Lincoln County Animal Shelter. The puppies are too young for the shelter environment but, thanks to Benton County residents who open their homes to foster animals, these young pups will be cared for with their mother until they are old enough for adoption.

Other dogs were transferred this week from Lane County Animals Services and Linn County Dog Control. One dog, who did not pass the behavior evaluation, will be transferred to a rescue group where he will receive care and training.

More information about adoptions and becoming a foster volunteer available at www.heartlandhumane.org.

.::Buster's Big Break::.

In March, the Corvallis High School Drama Department put on a production of The Wiz which featured a senior-aged Heartland dog named Buster as the character of Toto.

Buster, a 10 year old black lab mix, was transported by Heartland volunteers to the high school where he got to have his time in the limelight at the beginning and end of the musical based on The Wizard of Oz.

A very nice and calm dog, Buster seemed to be excited every day to get in the car and head to the school.  He would even drag volunteers up to the backstage door where he was greeted by dozens of students.

Although these are Buster’s twilight years let him serve as an example that you are never too old to have fun!

Thank you to the Corvallis High School Drama Department for including and promoting Heartland animals.  A big thank you to volunteers Becci Bergman, Eric Boddeker and Kristin Anderson for transporting Buster to and from the school.

Read more about the production and Buster's role on the Corvallis Gazette-Times website.
