HEARTLAND HUMANE SOCIETY'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TO OFFER SPECIAL ALL DAY PROGRAMS Heartland will offer age-appropriate, education and service learning programs to school-age kids on the days that the school district has been forced to cut. Heartland Humane Society recognizes the need for community groups to offer programming for school-age children on the days the school district has been forced to cut. Heartland's Humane Educator is developing special programs based on the successful daycamp that the animal welfare group runs every summer. "Our mission is to build a more compassionate community by teaching humane messages to our youth, caring for homeless animals and strengthening the human-animal bond. Our goals include expanding our youth programs and this is a great opportunity. Additionally, we saw the need to help working parents fill the childcare gap, so our programs will parallel the times of a regular school day," says Kerry Mullin, Executive Director. The schedule for Furry Fun Days will be:
Sessions will include watching special humane education videos, meeting with local animal experts, working hands-on with shelter animals and a craft project. Lunch at Papa's Pizza is included. Cost is $17 per day, $30 if two family members attend. A limited number of scholarships will be available on an as needed basis. Applications can be picked up from Heartland's main shelter at 398 SW Twin Oaks or at the Cat's Meow Thrift Shop, 110 SW Third, or downloaded from their website. Checks made out to Heartland Humane Society must be included with the applications. Heartland Humane Society is a nonprofit animal welfare organization founded in 1966. In November of 2000, the organization moved into a new facility to better serve the animals of Benton County. Heartland received more than 2300 animals last year. Heartland's Humane Educator taught bite prevention skills to more than 3000 school age children in that same time period. Beyond sheltering homeless animals and conducting humane education programs the organization provides lost and found services and distributes pet food to low-income pet owners. |
