.:: Free School Programs ::.

Oregon law requires that Humane Education be taught in our schools. Our free programs allow teachers to meet this requirement in a professional and fun way. Our educator visits classrooms throughout Benton County speaking to groups from Pre-schools through College. All programs are age-appropriate and interactive. We have six standard topics, but our educator can meet any need that your class has. The standard programs include:

  • Dog Bite Prevention
  • Animal Safety
  • Humane Society 101 - Heartland's role in the Community
  • You Can Be a Pet Psychic: How to Understand Pet Body Language
  • Careers With Animals
  • The Cycle of Violence - Animal Abuse and Neglect and Human Violence Connection.
Most programs feature hands on interaction with a child-friendly dog or cat. To schedule a visit with our educator please call Heartland at 757-9000.

Service Learning: Service learning projects are best arranged through our volunteer program
volunteer@heartlandhumane.org

Community Education: Our educator is only too happy to speak to community groups about the shelter or our education program. We are also at a number of community events from the Blessing of the Animals in the Fall to OSU's Mom's Weekend in the Spring to Pet Day at Garland's Nursery in early Summer. If you would like to have the shelter be part of your community event, please give us a call.

.:: Shelter Tours ::.

Guided Tours of the shelter are available for School, Scouting, 4H, Religious, Service and any other community group wishing to know more about the Humane Society. To arrange for a tour call Pat Kennedy at 757-9000.

.:: Camp Catnip ::.

Every summer Heartland Humane Society offers a weeklong day camp at the shelter. Camp is open to 3rd , 4th, and 5th graders, and one session is reserved for Middle School aged children 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The students spend one day learning about the shelter and how it works. For cat lovers there is a cat day and small animal day. One day is devoted to dogs, and children learn to train a dog as well as make dog biscuits.

On Career Day children will learn about different careers that focus on pets, and a visiting Vet helps them understand more about life as a Vet. The last day of camp is horse day, and we visit Inavale Farms and Stables to experience horses up-close and personal. Most of all children learn compassion and caring for and about creatures smaller and more dependent than they are.

.:: The Birthday Club ::.

To have your child learn the joys of giving why not join the Birthday Club? Children celebrate their birthdays by having guests bring gifts for the shelter animals. A tour of the shelter can be included in the party, or a child may wish to have a personal tour and bring the gifts in themselves. Parents tell us this really helps children learn that the joy is in the giving more than the receiving. Many families top off the day with a meal at Papa's Pizza down the street. It's a great way to celebrate a birthday.
