.:: Commitment to Compassion ::.
Throughout the past decade, Heartland Humane Society has outlined two "campaigns" which define the nature of our work. The first was a major push begun in 1995 to "End Needless Euthanasia." By all accounts this campaign was a success sending euthanasia rates plummeting 1638 in 1994 to 618 last year. The goal to end euthanasia did not expire at the end of five years, but rather is ingrained every day in all that we do.
This naturally rolled into the "Heartland Humane Society Capital Campaign," complimenting the drive to end needless euthanasia by raising funds to build the most necessary tool - a new shelter. Again, this campaign was a 5500 square foot success. Citizens of Benton County reached deep into their hearts and their wallets to provide needy and homeless animals the facility they deserve. The shelter is helping to save lives.
The facility provides a framework, but it does not solve the problems facing animals in Benton County. Having been in the building for 18 months, we knew it was time to launch a new campaign. The only true solution will come when we all make a "Commitment to Compassion" each and every day.
The board of directors, staff and volunteers of Heartland would like to tell you more about our commitment and ask you to get involved. Our mission to build a more compassionate community by teaching humane messages to our youth, caring for homeless animals and strengthening the human-animal bond will not be achieved until like-minded people make a similar commitment.
Each staff member of Heartland is committed to being a responsible pet owner. Our animals wear identification, are trained to behave in public and do not bring unwanted puppies and kittens into the world. This is the first step to compassion towards animals and we know that most of you have made this commitment.
Next we extend our circle of kindness outside of our homes. We all volunteer for Heartland, donating precious time to save animals. Most of us also volunteer for other animal groups, children's charities or through our churches.
Extending our compassion also includes educating our friends and families about the needs of animals and responsible pet ownership. This process does not have to be confrontational, it is as simple as sharing our email address or a copy of this article when you have finished reading it.
Finally, each of us donates money to the best of our ability to ensure that the homeless animals of Benton County have a place to go where they find a gentle hand, a kind voice and the food and medical care they need.
Our facility is a standing tribute to the generosity and caring of many individuals. Your contribution to the Capital Campaign is responsible for saving lives. Together we must ensure that the crucial work of Heartland Humane Society continues and that the investment we made in the new facility produces the desired result… an end to needless euthanasia and a more compassionate society. The "Commitment to Compassion" campaign is the logical next step for animal welfare in Benton County. It is an extension of our previous campaigns and a statement of our beliefs. We hope you will join us in making a commitment to compassion.
